Chapter Activity Leads to Special Olympics Addition

Special Olympics Indiana announced today that it has added ballroom dancing to its roster of Olympic-type sports. The decision came in part as a result of the work of Fort Wayne Dancesport, which collaborated with Special Olympics Indiana and Easter Seals Arc of Northeast Indiana to host the nation's first Special Olympics ballroom dance competition last July. Fort Wayne Dancesport has scheduled a second Special Olympics ballroom dance competition for July 5, 2009, in conjunction with the second USA Dance Fort Wayne Dancesport Championships amateur ballroom dance competition.

With today's announcement, ballroom dancing becomes the 22nd Special Olympics sport available for adults and children with intellectual disabilities in Indiana. Ballroom dancing is part of the Special Olympics Unified Sports® program, in which Special Olympics athletes are paired with individuals without intellectual disabilities. More than 2,000 Unified Partners currently participate in Special Olympics across the state of Indiana.

USA Dance presented its National Volunteer of the Year award for 2008-2009 to Fort Wayne Dancesport member Vivian Hans. Vivian received the honor during the USA Dance National Dancesport Championships in Baltimore in early April. Vivian is a charter member of Fort Wayne Dancesport. She has served in the past as chapter president and presently as newsletter editor. Along with her husband David, she serves as the Indiana State Coordinator. During 2008 Vivian served as membership chairman, 2008 charity dance committee member and as the Fort Wayne Dancesport representative and major driving contributor on the three charities (USA Dance Fort Wayne Dancesport, Special Olympics Indiana and Easter Seals ARC) that worked to bring ballroom dancing opportunities to the world of individuals with intellectual disabilities. She served as organizer of the USA Dance 2008 Fort Wayne Dancesport Championships, which included the nation's first Special Olympics ballroom dancing competition.

Receive Fort Wayne Dancesport Info Via Email

Fort Wayne Dancesport maintains an e-mail mailing list (commonly known in the computer world as a “listserv”) to enable chapter officers to provide information to members and other interested persons. Officers send monthly reminders of Fort Wayne Dancesport dances to this list, as well as other information of importance that they want to distribute before the next monthly newsletter goes out.

The subject headers of these email messages begin with “[F. W. Dancesport]”. If you are not getting such messages, that means chapter officers did not have your current, correct email address when they set up the mailing list, or that you joined the chapter since that time.

If you’d like to get these messages, subscribing is easy. Just follow the directions on the Email List web page.

If you have any questions, contact our webmaster.
