About Fort Wayne Dancesport

Fort Wayne Dancesport (FWD) is a local chapter (number 2046) of USA Dance, Inc., serving the greater Fort Wayne, Indiana area. It was founded in February, 1997 and hosted its first chapter dance in April, 1997.

The mission of USA Dance is to improve the quality and the quantity of ballroom dancing in the United States. USA Dance is a volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization serving as the National Governing Body for Dancesport in the USA. It is a member of the International Dance Sport Federation (IDSF) and an Affiliate Member of United States Olympic Committee (USOC). To learn more about USA Dance, see the organization’s national website.

Fort Wayne Dancesport hosts monthly social dances, usually the second Saturday of each month, usually in the ballroom of the Walb Memorial Union building on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. Group dance lessons normally precede each dance. For a schedule of upcoming chapter dances and detailed information about them, see our “FWD Events” page.

Since 2008, Fort Wayne Dancesport has hosted the USA Dance Fort Wayne Dancesport Championships amateur ballroom dance competition (sanctioned by USA Dance) and the Special Olympics Indiana Championships for Ballroom Dancing. Both events occur on the same weekend in July. The 2008 event was the first ballroom dance competition in the history of Special Olympics. For more information about the competitions, see our USA Dance Fort Wayne Dancesport Championships page.

In addition to hosting the Special Olympics competition, Fort Wayne Dancesport raises funds to support ballroom dance lessons for Fort Wayne-area Special Olympics athletes.

In 2008, USA Dance named Fort Wayne Dancesport Region Two Chapter of the Year and chapter member Vivian Hans Region Two Volunteer of the Year, in part because of the work Hans and the chapter did with Special Olympics. The same year, USA Dance named Hans National Volunteer of the Year.

Fort Wayne Dancesport regularly conducts public demonstrations of ballroom dancing, typically at a Fort Wayne shopping mall during National Ballroom Dance Week in September.
