USA Dance has presented its 2010 national award for Volunteer of the Year to a group of 39 Fort Wayne Dancesport members for their dedication to bringing the joy of dance to everyone and to showing that ballroom dancing is for everyone. The Unified Sports Dance Partners of Fort Wayne Dancesport #2046 earned the Volunteer of the Year award for partnering in ballroom dancing with the athletes of Special Olympics in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Ever wonder why competitive ballroom dancing is called "dancesport?" Dance Channel TV visited the USA Dance National Dancesport Championships and created the report below. It includes interviews with "Dancing with the Stars" judge Carrie Ann Inaba and USA Dance Dancesport Vice President Ken Richards. The report explains ballroom dance competition and covers the effort to make ballroom dancing part of the Olympics. It also covers social ballroom dance opportunities provided by USA Dance chapters.

Fort Wayne Dancesport is the local chapter for USA Dance and even though “Dancesport” is part of the chapter’s name, the chapter hosts monthly social ballroom dances. These dances are a great way to try ballroom dancing because each dance includes a group lesson. Even if you’ve never danced before, you can learn enough at the group lesson to enjoy the dance.
The next Fort Wayne Dancesport social ballroom dance is our semi-formal social dance, part of USA Dance Fort Wayne Dancesport Championships competition, Saturday, July 31, 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Grand Wayne Convention Center, 120 W. Jefferson Blvd., Fort Wayne, Indiana. Live music will be provided by the Mark Van Cleave Orchestra.
As for dancesport, the local chapter of USA Dance also provides you a chance to see true ballroom dance competition in person right here in Fort Wayne. The chapter hosts the annual Fort Wayne Dancesport Championships which draws excellent amateur couples from all over the Midwest. This year’s competition is combined with the Special Olympics Indiana Championships for Ballroom Dancing. It all happens July 31 and August 1 at the Grand Wayne Center in downtown Fort Wayne. The board of USA Dance FWDancesport #2046 wish to thank the individuals who helped us attain this matcing goal of $1,000 and we wish to thank the individual who made the initial donation of $2,000. All of these funds are to be used for training of Special Olympics athletes in the art of ballroom dancing to prepare them for the annual competition to be held July 31 & August 1, 2010 right here in Fort Wayne, Indiana along with the USA Dance FWDancesport annual amateur ballroom dance competition. The third annual amateur ballroom dance competition and Special Olympics Indiana Championships for Ballroom Dancing will take place July 31 and August 1, 2010. The location will be the Grand Wayne Center, Fort Wayne. See the competition web site for additional details.
Chapter Members Enjoy More USA Dance Competition Success
Fort Wayne Dancesport members Seth Brenneman and Bethany Lofgren placed first in both adult bronze American rhythm (cha-cha, rumba, swing) and adult silver American rhythm (cha-cha, rumba, swing, bolero) at the USA Dance Heartland Classic amateur ballroom competition October 3, 2009 in Indianapolis. The couple's placement in bronze rhythm earned them a $100 scholarship.
At the same competition the following day, the couple placed second in both adult bronze American smooth (waltz, tango, foxtrot) and in adult silver American smooth (waltz, tango, foxtrot, Viennese waltz).
